Budget (Airlines) is not always cheaper!

For most of us, when booking air tickets, searching for the lowest fares at budget airlines' website seems to be the default. But do you know that just because they are called "budget airlines" does not mean their fares are indeed cheaper?

Whenever I need to travel and book a flight whether domestic or international, I always see to it to look for the best deal and that includes checking the fares of other airlines flying to & from my destination. I have flown a number of times via Singapore Airlines (SQ) because their fare is sometimes cheaper than PAL or Cebu Pacific to Jakarta or Singapore. Best of all, I get to enjoy SQ's  world-class service!

Recently, I needed to book a flight from Manila to Cebu for business. I immediately checked the two budget airlines' websites for flights & fares for June 11 and got these:

Offhand, it seems AirPhil Express' fare is cheaper and since I needed to get to Cebu early that day, its arrival time of 8.45am seemed perfect. The caveat, however, is that I needed to get up early and leave the house by 6am at the latest to make it to the 7:35 am flight.

Then, I realised, Philippine Airlines (PAL) is also flying to Cebu and so I checked their website for flight schedules and fares for June 11 and this is what I got:

So I guess I need not tell you which airline I finally booked for my Cebu trip!

We don't usually realise but PAL's website immediately displays the "all-in" fare. While for Cebu Pac and AirPhil, they display the basic fare and adds additional charges (i.e. fuel surcharge) after you key in your personal details.

So the next time you need to book a flight, whether it's for domestic or international travel, be sure to check the website of all of the airlines that fly to your destination for the best flight & fare deal!
